The True Meaning of Christmas

Acting as the technical partner for Entire Direct Marketing, we've spent most of July thinking about Christmas. Strange to be talking about snow and turkey dinners when it's boiling outside!

The True Meaning of Christmas gives young people the opportunity to let loose untapped talent and creativity by making their own short films on what Christmas means to them.

Visitors to the site will be able to register their interest, watch the films and give their feedback by giving each one a star rating. A whole host of fantastic prizes will be won by the director of the best video, as judged by a panel of experts.

The competition closes on 10th October so take a look at the site and get started on your short fims now!

New look Connexions

We're proud to announce the re-launch of Connexions West of England's website – complete with an entirely new look and feel, updated content and additional functionality.

The Professionals area has been developed in response to an increased focus on providing young people with good quality, comprehensive and impartial information. This section gives people the advice and guidance necessary when making tough choices and decisions in an increasingly competitive working environment.

Young people can search for vacancies in a much easier and smarter way and will be able to compare vacancies like-for-like, while seeing how far an organization is from their home.

Parents & Carers
aren't left out, with an area developed specifically to help them provide the latest information regarding education, training and work opportunities for children in their care.

The content has undergone a thorough revision, while the design aims to appeal to a wider range of visitors. Staff at Connexions will also take full control over future site content by using our intuitive content management system, Carbon.

SEO case study

Following on from their successful blog integration earlier this year, New Walk Chambers have taken further steps to improve their organic search ranking by:

  • including site-wide SEO-friendly urls
  • creating a Google local business centre profile
  • updating meta descriptions and keywords on each page of the website
  • checking each page adheres to Level 1 w3c web accessibililty guidelines.

They hope that these changes, together with a new Google Adwords campaign will increase their online exposure and drive more traffic to their website.

ICANN make up any domain I like!

domain name freedomHow about...

best-cakes-in.theworld?

restaurant-at.theendoftheuniverse?

my-dad-is-better-than.yours?!

or, more applicably:

focusnewmedia.bristol?

These are just some of the potential urls that may come out of ICANN's latest announcement regarding top level domains.

Caving into stakeholder pressure, ICANN have agreed to open up the virtual real estate of the web by making it possible for people to select their own domain names.

Currently, internet users have a limited choice of 21 domain extensions, such as .com, .org, and .uk.  By this time next year people may be able to apply for whatever they like.

A major factor behind this change was the pressure and influence exerted by non-English users of the web.

"One of the most exciting prospect before us is that the expanding system is also being planned to support extensions in the languages of the world," said Peter Dengate Thrush, ICANN's Chairman. "This is going to be very important for the future of the Internet in Asia, the Middle East, Eastern Europe and Russia." The present system only supports 37 Roman characters.

Many pundits see this move as an act of appeasement to the Chinese, who have made many moves to implement a separate internet (going further, even than their Great Firewall).  Others see it as an inevitable solution to increasing web usage, much like the periodic extension of local telephone codes.

I'm personally hanging on to get first dibs at my own name extension - hands off all you other amy wilson's!
